A tool for reviewing turbine blade inspection findings at a wind energy company. It was in use, and it was old.
Every number, label and chart on these screens is dummy data or lorem ipsum. I am not allowed to show the real content.
The tool
Old design needed
refreshing
Users came to us with a list of features they wanted added. We took that as an opening to redesign the whole tool instead of fitting more onto what was already there.
It had been in use for years and had grown one addition at a time. The features were the reason to start, not the limit of the work.

Some of them were serious. Before drawing anything I went through the screen and marked every one I could find.

Every note from the audit had to be answered, and the work people do here all day decided what got the space and the weight.
03 — The finding card
A card that could
not get any wider
The table needed the width, so the card was held to its minimum. Everything a finding carries had to fit that one column.
That meant deciding what has to be there the moment a finding opens, and what can wait a click.

04 — The report
Pick what goes
in the report
The old report came out complete. Users opened it in Acrobat afterwards and deleted the parts they didn't need.
Now it is put together before it is generated, so nothing has to be taken out afterwards.
